Two EMHS Students Receive Inaugural Scholarship Award

For the 2016-2017 school year, East Mountain High School was the recipient of a generous donation from community member, Sam Martin. Mr. Martin is the administrator of the Twoie Foundation, a fund that honors the life and legacy of his brother.

With this $36,000 contribution, East Mountain High School is excited to create the College Success Fund. This fund created two scholarships for two outstanding seniors each year. The award is renewable for four years of college, resulting in $8,000 for each recipient.

The remainder of the fund will defray the costs of East Mountain High School’s Dual Credit program by purchasing college textbooks for our students. The Dual Credit law in New Mexico allows high school students to take free college courses from local universities but requires the high school to pay for the cost of the textbook. Each year, EMHS spends approximately $20,000 on college textbooks.

The students, faculty, and staff are incredibly appreciative of Sam Martin’s generous gift. Because of this new fund, EMHS can continue providing the best education in New Mexico and encourage all students to achieve in college and beyond.

The inaugural recipients of this year’s scholarship are Sofia Hoskins and Jessie Linder. Both students demonstrated exceptional commitment to academics and extra-curricular activities. They were important leaders all four years on campus and two of the most successful debaters in state history. Sofia was the Governor of the Youth and Government program, in addition to serving as captain of the Cheer and Dance program. Jessie Linder is a nationally-ranked cyclist and completed a prestigious internship at Sandia National Labs. Both students will attend New Mexico State University this Fall. Sofia was admitted to the Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program and Jessie will study Chemical Engineering.
