The National Forensic League has selected East Mountain High School Principal Doug Wine as its 2013 Principal of the Year. The National Forensic League Principal of the Year program began in 2011 as a means to recognize outstanding secondary school principals. The program annually honors principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality opportunities for students in speech and debate programming as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.

East Mountain High School plans a special Senior Recognition Night on Wednesday, May 15 at 6:30pm at Vista Grande Community Center. The purpose of the Senior Recognition Night is to honor each senior for his or her academic accomplishments and to award an outstanding senior in each department. Each winner of an outstanding senior award will receive a $50.00 scholarship for books from the East Mountain High School Foundation.

EMHS to Present Arts Extravaganza in Madrid this Saturday

On Saturday, May 4, 2013 the East Mountain High School Recording Arts, Drama 2 and Creative Arts classes will be kicking off the Madrid 40th anniversary rebirth celebration. This is a very exciting event for both the Madrid and East Mountain communities. The event will take place at the Engine House Theatre which is connected to the Mine Shaft Tavern. The show will kick off with the Drama 2 class performing “AP Theater” by Ed Monk starting at 7:00pm. During intermission, the entrance to the Mine Shaft tavern will be transformed to showcase the Creative Art students’ compositions depicting Madrid’s “re-birth.” The students work will remain up for the reminder of the month. At 8:15 the Recording Arts students will perform their original compositions at the Engine House Theater as the conclusion to the event. Seating is limited, so if you plan on attending it is recommended that you are prompt!

On Friday, April 19, East Mountain High School hosted East Mountain Idol, the school’s annual talent show, in the Fisher and Smith Memorial Gym at Vista Grande Community Center. Over twenty students participated in the talent show, which included acts ranging from rap to rock. Sophomore Renaya Demarest emceed the show, which was organized by music teacher Michael Wood.

East Mountain High School senior Brianna Gurule was one of five winners of the 2013 Sage Magazine Making a Difference Award. The winners of the award were honored Friday, April 12 at a luncheon featuring a Governor Susana Martinez as the keynote speaker. The other students honored included Kelly Oostman of Big Woods Academy, Lauren Dennis of Bosque School, Tryslyn Campos of Volcano Vista High and Ranjavola Andriamanana of Albuquerque High.

2012 East Mtn. High School Yearbook Takes Top Honors in State

Congratulations to the East Mountain High School 2012 yearbook staff. The 2012 East Mountain High School Yearbook – The View – was named the top yearbook in the state by the New Mexico Scholastic Press Association. The View was also recognized for the top theme development in the state; the 2012 yearbook theme was “In a Word.” Singled out for special recognition were Renaya Demarest and Bella Santistevan for best class spread and Christina Duprey for best student life spread.

East Mtn. Trio Takes Third Place in Global IPPF Competition

The final rounds of the International Public Policy Forum concluded Saturday, April 13 in New York City, with East Mountain High School finishing third. The International Public Policy Forum is a global debate competition sponsored by the Bickel and Brewer Law Firm and New York University. The trio of competitors from East Mountain -- James Clarke, Eric Eridon and Nick Kennedy -- earned an all expenses paid trip to New York to compete by virtue of progressing through rounds of written essays. Once in New York, they competed live in front of a panel of judges to win third place.

EMHS Speech and Debate Boasts Seven National Qualifiers

For the fifth year in a row, East Mountain High School has qualified to the National Speech and Debate Tournament, the world’s largest academic competition. And for the third year in a row, EMHS has qualified more students to that tournament than any other New Mexico school.

The East Mountain High School Speech and Debate Team won the state championship in Santa Fe this weekend, finishing with a fifty point lead over Albuquerque Academy. Finishing in third place was La Cueva High School.

East Mountain boasted seven state champions, along with numerous students claiming other honors and prizes. James Clarke was named the James Akin Outstanding Student of the Year, while Eric Eridon was named the Bennett Top Speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Said Coach Trey Smith, “I am proud to see these students building upon past successes and breaking new ground. Every single competitor dug deep and put unbelievable amounts of time and effort into achieving this result.”

Three members of the East Mountain High School Speech and Debate team – Eric Eridon, James Clark and Nick Kennedy -- have advanced to the finals International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). The IPPF is an international debate competition sponsored by Brickel & Brewer and NYU in New York City. By making it to the “Elite 8” round of competition, the East Mountain High School team members have earned an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to compete in the IPPF Finals from April 12 to 14. There, East Mountain will compete for $10,000 and the right to be named the World Champion.

Central New Mexico Community College has scheduled a section of HIST 1101 Western Civilization and PSY 1105 Introduction to Psychology to be held at East Mountain High School. Both classes are open to both East Mountain High School students and community members. Interested students should see Ms. Millea in the Student Guidance Center. Interested community members should register for the class through CNM at www.cnm.edu.

HIST 1101, a three-credit class, will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:35pm between February 19, 2013 and April 27, 2013. The CRN number for HIST 1101 is 84391.

East Mountain High School Light the Night Cancelled

Due to poor weather conditions, East Mountain High School is cancelling its Light the Night celebration planned for Friday, December 14th from 5:30pm to 9:30pm at Vista Grande Community Center. The event will not be rescheduled.

In other weather related news, school will be dismissed at 1:30pm on Friday. The girls basketball team will not play its scheduled game on Saturday.

East Mountain High School students Eric Eridon, Nick Kennedy and James Clarke recently learned that they had made it into the Top 32 in the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). The International Public Policy Forum was founded in 2001 by the law firm of Bicker & Brewer. It is the only contest that gives high school students from around the globe the opportunity to engage in written and oral debate on the issues of public policy. Now jointed administered by the Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University, the program is free and available to all public and private high school students worldwide.

EMHS Girls Cross Country Team Take 2nd in State Championship

The East Mountain High School Girls Cross-Country team took second place in state championship AA competition at the Rio Rancho High School course this Saturday. This is an improvement on last year's 3rd place finish. Navajo Prep finished in first place. Addison Rauch (20:44.40) and Talynn Turner (20:48.50) finished in the top ten and were named All-State. Amira Cunningham (21:01.15), Tatiana Perlinski (21:26.05) and Sarah DeRochie (22:47.45) were also top finishers for the Timberwolves.

East Mountain High School seniors Dominic Podzemny and Ria Quintana have been recognized by the College Board as National Hispanic Scholars through the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors nearly 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from the approximately 235,000 Hispanic/Latino students who take the PSAT/NMSQT® during their junior years.

Sunday, ten students from East Mountain High School returned from a week in the Czech Republic where they participated in an international robotics exchange organized by AMAVET, a Czech science organization, and Inquiry Facilitators, a New Mexico based science education non-profit. Accompanying the students were robotics teacher Olga Vazquez and principal Doug Wine.

Corley's Night Under the Stars Raises Record Amount for EMHS

Saturday night the East Mountain High School Foundation hosted the 12th Annual Night Under the Stars Gala presented by Corley’s Albuquerque Lincoln●Volvo. This yearly event, held at the Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club, combined a golf tournament and gala with musical entertainment, catered hors d’oeuvres, a raffle drawing for a trip for two to San Francisco, a silent auction with over 150 items and an exciting live auction. The Corley’s Golf Tournament, held for the second time on last Thursday, grew from 68 golfers to 108 golfers this year.

On Friday at Isotopes Park, the East Mountain High School baseball team claimed its first 2A state championship, triumphing 9-0 over the Santa Rosa Lions in seven innings. Ray Demarest, the only senior on the team, pitched five shut-out innings before turning the mound over to R.J. Butler, who pitched the final two innings. Because finals concluded on Thursday, the stands at Isotopes Park Friday were full of EMHS students, parents and faculty waving paws and cheering on the T’Wolves.

At the 11th annual East Mountain Celebration held Sunday, May 6, 2012, long-time East Mountain High School Governing Council members David Walter and Dennis Hodges were honored by Bernalillo County with the 2012 Outstanding Citizens award. The award was presented at a ceremony at Los Vecinos Community Center at 12:15pm.

County Commissioner Wayne Johnson was on hand to present the honorees with their awards. Said Johnson, "We've got a number of groups that we are going to honoring as outstanding citizens. It's an honor to be recognizing them." Hodges and Walter were singled out for their work on behalf of East Mountain High School.

East Mountain High School Music Department to Hold Two Free Concerts

On Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4, East Mountain High School will host two free concerts on the lawn in front of the school.

On Thursday, the Recording Arts Ensemble will perform beginning at 6:00pm. On Friday, the Recording Arts Ensemble will be joined by the Beginning Music Ensemble and the Advanced Guitar students and will perform beginning at 5:00pm. Each performance will be led by Music Director Michael Wood.

Please join East Mountain High School in celebrating the achievements of our student musicians. Remember to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and to pack a picnic to enjoy these exciting evenings.

East Mountain High School to Hold Speech and Debate Showcase

On Wednesday, May 2 at 6:00pm, the East Mountain High School Speech and Debate Team will hold a Speech Showcase at Vista Grande Community Center. The Speech Showcase will highlight a sample of the team’s finest performers and will raise money for the ten students traveling to Indianapolis to compete in this year’s National Forensic League Tournament. Tickets are $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults.

At the annual Youth in Government simulation held in Santa Fe, the East Mountain High School team took home several top awards, according to coach Vincent Langan. Joseph Young and Quinlan Cao were named Best Attorneys. Jace Reynolds and Quinlan Cao were awarded Best Oral Argument. Tyler Hilbun and Joseph Young were runner-up.

East Mountain High School celebrated an outstanding speech and debate season at its annual speech and debate banquet on April 17. The ceremony was held at Four Hills Country Club. According to EMHS Speech and Debate Coach, Trey Smith, team members received their new degrees at the ceremony and were recognized for accomplishments throughout the year.

In a recent judging by the New Mexico Scholastic Press Association, the EMHS yearbook received Honorable Mention in the Overall Best Yearbook Competition. Erin Thomas and Kelsey Wilson received 2nd Place in the Class Spread Category. Tiersa Cimino received Honorable Mention in the Student Life Spread Category. Jacob Covell received Honorable Mention in the Sports Spread Category.

East Mountain High School senior Jace Reynolds has earned the degree of Premier Distinction – the highest degree of student membership in the National Forensic League. A degree of Premier Distinction conveyed by the National Forensic League reflects sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds and service projects. More than 200 students were at Albuquerque Academy on March 29-31, 2012 to participate in the New Mexico district tournament. Save the date for East Mountain Idol, to be held Thursday, April 19^th at 6:00pm in the Fisher and Smith Memorial Gymnasium. East Mountain Idol is East Mountain High School’s annual talent show and it never fails to impress. On Sunday, it became official. East Mountain High School won the New Mexico State Speech and Debate Tournament in Santa Fe, repeating their victory from last year. The victory wasn’t a surprise. The team had dominated competitions throughout the year, finishing in first place overall in virtually all the tournaments in which they competed. Last year, East Mountain came from behind to triumph over Albuquerque Academy, the perennial state winner, by a slim one point margin. This year, the victory was more comfortable. La Cueva High School finished in second place, with Albuquerque Academy taking third.

Hallie Taylor Brown, 18, of Sandia Park, was named today as one of New Mexico’s four top youth volunteers for 2012 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteering. Taylor Brown, an East Mountain High School senior, was recognized as a Distinguished Finalist by the judges for her volunteer work and will receive a bronze medallion. Jerry Hour, 17, an Albuquerque Academy student, was chosen as the State Honoree and will receive a silver medallion, a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC to compete for one of just five National Honoree scholarships.

East Mountain High School First at Regional MESA Engineering Competition

East Mountain High School will be sending two teams to the state MESA competition in April after a successful showing at the regional “Design Day” this past Friday. Gabe Anderson, Kevin Helfert, Aaron Pianka and Kevin Elrick shone in both the on-site bridge building competition and the prepared design mechanical car competition, finishing in first place in both events with a total of 323 points. Teams from Manzano High School and Valley High School were close behind, with 310 points and 278 points respectively.

Seniors and families are invited to a FAFSA Completion Workshop at East Mountain High School in the Portable Building Computer Lab on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30pm. The FAFSA is the free application for federal financial aid for attending college. Most colleges require students to complete the FAFSA before making students eligible for scholarships, loans or other forms of financial aid.

New Mexico Court of Appeals Hears Case at East Mountain High School

January was a learning experience like no other for East Mountain High School students studying Government. Students got a first hand look at the finer points of the judicial system when the New Mexico Court of Appeals heard a real case and issued a binding decision in front of a live audience. The case was argued at Vista Grande Community Center beginning at 9:45am and took about two hours.
