This is a very exciting event for both the Madrid and East Mountain communities. The event will take place at the Engine House Theatre which is connected to the Mine Shaft Tavern.  The show will kick off with the Drama 2 class performing “AP Theater” by Ed Monk starting at 7:00pm.  During intermission, the entrance to the Mine Shaft tavern will be transformed to showcase the Creative Art students’ compositions depicting Madrid’s “re-birth.” The students work will remain up for the reminder of the month. At 8:15 the Recording Arts students will perform their original compositions at the Engine House Theater as the conclusion to the event. Seating is limited, so if you plan on attending it is recommended that you are prompt!</p>

<p>On Friday, April 19, East Mountain High School hosted East Mountain Idol, the school’s annual talent show, in the Fisher and Smith Memorial Gym at Vista Grande Community Center. Over twenty students participated in the talent show, which included acts ranging from rap to rock. Sophomore Renaya Demarest emceed the show, which was organized by music teacher Michael Wood.</p>

<p>The final rounds of the International Public Policy Forum concluded Saturday, April 13 in New York City, with East Mountain High School finishing third. The International Public Policy Forum is a global debate competition sponsored by the Bickel and Brewer Law Firm and New York University. The trio of competitors from East Mountain -- James Clarke, Eric Eridon and Nick Kennedy -- earned an all expenses paid trip to New York to compete by virtue of progressing through rounds of written essays. Once in New York, they competed live in front of a panel of judges to win third place.</p>

The International Public Policy Forum was founded in 2001 by the law firm of Bicker & Brewer.  It is the only contest that gives high school students from around the globe the opportunity to engage in written and oral debate on the issues of public policy.  Now jointed administered by the Bickel & Brewer Foundation and New York University, the program is free and available to all public and private high school students worldwide.</p>

This is an improvement on last year's 3rd place finish. Navajo Prep finished in first place. Addison Rauch (20:44.40) and Talynn Turner (20:48.50) finished in the top ten and were named All-State. Amira Cunningham (21:01.15), Tatiana Perlinski (21:26.05) and Sarah DeRochie (22:47.45) were also top finishers for the Timberwolves.</p>

This yearly event, held at the Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club, combined a golf tournament and gala with musical entertainment, catered hors d’oeuvres, a raffle drawing for a trip for two to San Francisco, a silent auction with over 150 items and an exciting live auction.  The Corley’s Golf Tournament, held for the second time on last Thursday, grew from 68 golfers to 108 golfers this year.</p>

	On Friday at Isotopes Park, the East Mountain High School baseball team claimed its first 2A state championship, triumphing 9-0 over the Santa Rosa Lions in seven innings.  Ray Demarest, the only senior on the team, pitched five shut-out innings before turning the mound over to R.J. Butler, who pitched the final two innings.  Because finals concluded on Thursday, the stands at Isotopes Park Friday were full of EMHS students, parents and faculty waving paws and cheering on the T’Wolves.</p>

	At the 11th annual East Mountain Celebration held Sunday, May 6, 2012, long-time East Mountain High School Governing Council members David Walter and Dennis Hodges were honored by Bernalillo County with the 2012 Outstanding Citizens award.  The award was presented at a ceremony at Los Vecinos Community Center at 12:15pm.</p>

	County Commissioner Wayne Johnson was on hand to present the honorees with their awards.  Said Johnson, "We've got a number of groups that we are going to honoring as outstanding citizens.  It's an honor to be recognizing them."  Hodges and Walter were singled out for their work on behalf of East Mountain High School.</p>

	On Sunday, it became official. East Mountain High School won the <strong>New Mexico State Speech and Debate Tournament in Santa Fe</strong>, repeating their victory from last year. The victory wasn’t a surprise. The team had dominated competitions throughout the year, finishing in first place overall in virtually all the tournaments in which they competed. Last year, East Mountain came from behind to triumph over Albuquerque Academy, the perennial state winner, by a slim one point margin. This year, the victory was more comfortable. La Cueva High School finished in second place, with Albuquerque Academy taking third.</p>

	This President’s Day weekend, twenty-four students represented East Mountain High School at the 38th Annual Harvard University National Forensics Tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  They were part of 3,500 total competitors representing more than forty states and four countries.</p>

	Hallie Taylor Brown, 18, of Sandia Park, was named today as one of New Mexico’s four top youth volunteers for 2012 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteering.  Taylor Brown, an East Mountain High School senior, was recognized as a Distinguished Finalist by the judges for her volunteer work and will receive a bronze medallion.  Jerry Hour, 17, an Albuquerque Academy student, was chosen as the State Honoree and will receive a silver medallion, a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC to compete for one of just five National Honoree scholarships.</p>

	East Mountain High School will be sending two teams to the state MESA competition in April after a successful showing at the regional “Design Day” this past Friday.  Gabe Anderson, Kevin Helfert, Aaron Pianka and Kevin Elrick shone in both the on-site bridge building competition and the prepared design mechanical car competition, finishing in first place in both events with a total of 323 points.  Teams from Manzano High School and Valley High School were close behind, with 310 points and 278 points respectively.</p>

Students got a first hand look at the finer points of the judicial system when the New Mexico Court of Appeals heard a real case and issued a binding decision in front of a live audience.
