Scholarships

While applying to colleges and universities, make sure to take note of opportunities for merit scholarships, need-based financial assistance, and other awards. At many institutions, you must apply for scholarships by separate application. You should not assume that test scores, GPA, or extracurricular activities will automatically qualify you for merit or needs-based awards. Families should also not automatically assume they won’t qualify for need-based assistance.

In addition to applying for college- or university-sponsored scholarships, you can also seek outside opportunities. Free scholarship services available on the internet are a great place to begin. Two of the most notable are FastWEB, www.fastweb.com, the largest free scholarship service on the internet, and Scholarships.com, www.scholarships.com, which provides a comprehensive search service. Other websites are: College Net at http://www.collegenet.com/mach25/app, Go College at www.gocollege.com, SallieMae at www.cashe.com, FinAid at www.finaid.org/scholarships, Scholarship Help and Advice Center at http://www.scholarshiphelp.org/, and FastAid at www.fastAid.com.

You can also use Naviance for scholarship searches. There is an extensive listing of local and national scholarships. Visit the Naviance website at http://connection.naviance.com/eastmtn. Students received a log in and password information when they registered for classes or filled out the Next Step Plan. If you need help accessing Naviance, please contact Mr. Kindel at mkindel@eastmountainhigh.net or 505-281-7400 x. 165.
