Jim L. Healy Memorial Scholarship for Future Educators

JIM L. HEALY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR FUTURE EDUCATORS

East Mountain High School students graduating in 2012 are invited to apply for the Jim L. Healy Scholarship for Future Educators.

In 1997, Debbie and Jim Healy were two of the first community members to express their interest in a new high school to be built in the East Mountains. Debbie and Jim believed in being active in this dream and when the school opened its doors in 2000, Debbie was working at EMHS and Jim soon joined the school’s Governing Council. While serving nearly nine years on the Council, Jim was a member of nearly every committee and served as the Council chair for three years.

Both Jake and Alissa Healy graduated from East Mountain High School.  Today, Jake is studying literature for his doctorate at UNM and Alissa holds a degree of Archeology from Northern Arizona University.

Jim was truly a Renaissance man, one who had a wide range of accomplishments and intellectual interests. He operated a successful business for a number of years, and he loved literature and poetry. But he also had greater passion – he loved kids and he was delighted by the thought of becoming a teacher, especially a teacher at EMHS. So in his fifties, when many retirees are content to play golf and ponder the meaning of life, Jim returned to college to pursue and eventually earn his teaching credentials.  He was so excited about teaching and about the kids in his classes at EMHS. He loved his students and he couldn’t stop talking about them and the joy they gave to each other.

Jim’s teaching career was far too short, but he left an indelible mark at EMHS. In memory of Jim L Healy and of his contribution to this fine school, his fellow Governing Council members are proud to establish the $1,000 “Jim L Healy Memorial Scholarship for Future Educators,” to be presented annually to a graduating senior who exhibits Jim’s intellectual interests and who is passionate about becoming a teacher.

The applicant for this scholarship must present:

  • a cumulative 3.0 grade-point-average,
  • evidence of a passion for teaching, and
  • evidence of a desire to choose education as college major and pursue teaching as a future career.

Each of the Scholarship recipients shall be a graduate or graduating senior of EMHS, accepted to either 4-year accredited college or university, or an EMHS student currently enrolled in such a college or university. The beneficiary of the Scholarship may use the Scholarship in support of his/her educational expenses. The Scholarship does not have to be paid back; however, we would encourage the recipients to educate future students in the spirit of East Mountain High School and teach with passion for the subject, concern for the student, and commitment to excellence.

All applications are due for the Jim L. Healy Scholarship for Future Educators to the East Mountain High School Guidance office on April 16, 2012.  The application form and instructions are below:
