The East Mountain High School SPSO invites you to celebrate the holidays with us at the sixth annual Light the Night, the SPSO's annual holiday event and major fundraiser.  Please mark your calendars for Friday, December 9, from 5:30 – 8:30pm, for a night of beautiful luminaria, fantastic shopping, fun, food and friendship and a performance from the EMHS Music Program.

At Light the Night, over 5,000 glowing luminaria will decorate the East Mountain High School campus, more than one for every dollar received in donations from the community. Come to see the luminaria and stay for the holiday music, hot cocoa and cookies, auction, and holiday shopping! Over a dozen arts and crafts vendors will be there to make finding the perfect gift easy.

The East Mountain High School Music Department Winter Concert begins at 7:00pm. Under the direction of Michael Wood, the Beginning and Intermediate Guitar classes will perform. There is no charge to attend this concert, which promises to be outstanding.

EMHS students should have received an envelope with a donation form and information about Light the Night in his or her advocacy.  We ask our students to take this opportunity to ask family, friends, neighbors and local businesses to make a donation to EMHS.  We ask every student to solicit at least $15 in donations to EMHS - this will allow us to meet our goal of raising $5,000 through Light the Night and putting out 5000 luminaria on December 9th.

Donation envelopes are due Monday, December 5th.  The SPSO asks that all students return their envelopes, regardless of whether or not they participated in fundraising. Remember that Light the Night is also a fundraiser for Discovery Projects.  For every dollar a student collects, 50% will go to help pay for his or her Discovery Project.  Seniors’ portion will go towards the annual Senior Week.

Donations of paper bags, candles and long-handled lighters are still needed, as our donations of desserts and other items for our silent auction. Also, volunteers are still needed to help fold bags over the next two weeks and to help set up and light luminaria on December 9th. To donate or volunteer, please contact Lori Webster at 281-7400 x. 168 or lwebster@eastmountainhigh.net.

FAQ

Q

What is Light the Night?

A

Light the Night is a fundraiser for the EMHS SPSO and a community event. On Friday, December 9th, for every dollar that is donated to the school, we will place one luminaria on the grounds of the high school. On that same night from 5:30-9:30pm, the community is invited to come to the school gymnasium for holiday treats, a silent auction, a dessert auction, activities for little kids and the end of semester performance from the EMHS Music Program.

Q

What can students do help raise money?

A

We need students to solicit donations for luminaria. Please use the envelope you will receive in your advocacy class. Ask your parents, grandparents, family members, neighbors and friends to donate – even just one dollar! For every dollar you raise, we will light one luminaria during Light the Night. Our goal is to raise $5000 - $15 for each student at EMHS.

Q

How does this benefit me?

A

Besides raising money for your school, for every dollar you get in luminaria donations, you will get 50 cents back towards Discovery or Senior Week. If you solicit $20 in donations, $10 will go right back to you in your Discovery account.

Q

Can I get the money back in cash to me personally?

A

No.

Q

What do I do with the money I collect? Are donations tax-deductible?

A

You will receive an envelope with a sales sheet attached. Please have donors fill out the sales sheets and include their address if they would like to receive a thank you letter for tax purposes. Put your Light the Night money in the envelope along with the sales sheet. Once you are finished collecting donations for luminaria, please bring to the EMHS Guidance Office and turn them into Lori Webster. If you check the thank you box on your form, your donors will receive a thank you letter and receipt for their taxes.

Q

Am I responsible for the envelope I receive?

A

Yes. If you don’t sell luminaria, you must turn the envelope back into Lori Webster in the Guidance Office.

Q

What else can students and parents do to help with Light the Night?

A

We need students and parents to donate paper bags, candles, lighters, holiday treats and silent auction items. Before the event, we need volunteers to fold paper bags. On the day of the event, we need volunteers to put out and light luminaria and to help with setting up for the event and selling concessions. After the event, we need volunteers to help clean up. To volunteer, please contact Lori Webster at 281-7400 x. 168 or lwebster@eastmountainhigh.net.

Q

Do students get community service hours? Do parents get volunteer hours?

A

Yes, you get community service hours for folding luminaria and working on the night of the event. When you turn in folded bags to Lori Webster in the front office, she will fill out a form for you. Also, your parents can earn hours towards their requirement of 8 hours a month in volunteer time for the school.
