Mission & History

The EMHS Foundation is a New Mexico non-profit corporation, recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) organization. The EMHS Foundation was formed to support the East Mountain High School, a public charter high school, established in Sandia Park, New Mexico in 1999. Since its inception, the Foundation, which is operated by a three-person volunteer board of directors and seven volunteer trustees, has been responsible for:

  • Soliciting and accepting donation of 26 acres of land for the EMHS campus.

  • Obtaining a conventional 20-year mortgage at 4.25% to finance $3.1 million for construction of 40,000 square feet of classroom, science lab, office and meeting room space to accommodate the school’s operation.

  • Overseeing master planning, design and construction of the school facilities.

  • Negotiating a joint-use agreement with a neighboring community center for use of the center’s athletic fields, stage space and large assembly space.

  • Working with the New Mexico State Legislature to obtain capital outlay funding for EMHS and to introduce capital funding legislation for charter schools (the latter was passed in the 2004 legislative session).

  • Raising more than $500,000 in support of the school over the last four years.

The EMHS Foundation is committed to supporting the near and long-term financial stability of EMHS to enable EMHS to continually improve the educational program offered to EMHS students.
