Welcome to the East Mountain High School Library
At East Mountain High School, we believe the library should be at the heart of the school and its academic mission. Twenty computers are available in the library for students use; students are encouraged to visit the library for assistance with research projects, college applications and academic assistance.
The library hours of operation are from 8:00am to 3:35pm daily. Homework Center and other tutoring are held in the Library from 3:45pm – 4:45pm daily. EMHS Librarian Shawn Childers is available between 8:00am and noon daily for assistance with library materials and research questions.
Athena Library Search
The operating system for the library is Athena. Students can access Athena by computer to perform searches for library materials. To help you understand the format of the information available, listed below are the prefixes used.
BIO – Biographies-Books
CD – Books on disc or music
CL – Classroom library (resources located in a teacher’s classroom)
CS – Classroom sets (located in the POD behind the library)
DVD – Movies
OTH – Equipment, i.e. headphones, overhead projectors
PD – Professional development (Teacher’s Lounge-Bldg. 2 check out on the honor system)
REF – Reference books-library or classroom use only, not checked out to students.
TR – Teacher’s resource (Teacher’s Lounge-Bldg. 2. check out on the honor system)
TXT – Textbooks (located in the textbook storage area near the library)
VID – Movies on VHS
Gale Group Research Databases
The Gale Group is a division of Cengage Learning which offers numerous databases. East Mountain High School is able to access many of these databases through the New Mexico State Library. To access Gale Group databases, students should visit their website: http://www.elportalnm.org
El Portal is a collection of databases that provide free 24/7 access to resources such as newspapers, magazine and journal articles, and books such as encyclopedias. Materials are available for all age ranges and interests. The New Mexico State Library licenses these resources for all New Mexico residents thanks to funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
Additional Research Resources
The New Mexico State Library provides numerous other data bases to all schools. We can access approximately 35 databases with 126,419,072 documents.
The Bernalillo County Library system is also a wonderful resource that will send books to the Tijeras East Mountain Library within a few days.
- No cell phone usage is permitted
- No food or drink in library
- Students are limited to 5 books
- Books are checked out for 3 weeks but may be renewed
- Overdue books are charged a late fee of 5 cents each school day
- Lost or destroyed books must be paid for at the cost to replace the book
- A hold will be placed on students’ academic records when a library materials are overdue
- Textbooks or novels required for class will be checked out for the duration of the class or length of time indicated by the teacher.
