Important Dates & Information

Congratulations to the Class of 2017! This letter contains very important information regarding graduation and several events leading up to the special occasion. Please mark your calendars for the Class of 2017 Graduation Ceremony on Sunday, May 14th from 3:00PM – 5:00PM at the Kiva Auditorium in the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Prepare for the Graduation Ceremony

To make the ceremony more personable and give an opportunity for students to share their best, we are asking parents and seniors to work together to complete several items, including: Graduation Questionnaire, Senior Statement/Blurb, Individual Quote and Baby & Senior Picture. As your student walks across the stage at the graduation ceremony, the senior statement/blurb will be read aloud and his/her baby picture, senior picture, and favorite quote will appear on a large screen.

QUESTIONNAIRE: The information provided in the Graduation Questionnaire will be used to create the graduation program. Students must enter the final draft of their questionnaire in Naviance. Although the final deadline is April 15th, Mrs. Millea will appreciate the information sooner.

SENIOR STATEMENT aka “BLURB”: The “blurb” is the statement read aloud as your senior walks across the stage to receive his/her diploma at the graduation ceremony. The statement should be no more than four sentences long and may include a special thanks or post-secondary plans or goals. Copies of blurbs from years past are available in the Student Guidance Center if a student needs ideas. Students must enter the final draft of their blurb in Naviance by April 15th.

BABY & SENIOR PICTURES: Please help your senior by selecting a baby picture. If your student would like to use the senior picture that he/she chose for the yearbook, you do NOT need to submit a senior picture. However, if you would like to use a different senior picture, you must give the new picture to Mrs. McKnight in the Student Guidance Center. It would be greatly appreciated if the baby and senior pictures are digital, but a hard copy is fine. We will scan the picture and return it to your student. Digital pictures should be e-mailed to Mrs. McKnight at We are asking for pictures far in advance as it will take us some time to coordinate the efforts to make this a memorable and special event for your senior and family. Please submit pictures to Mrs. McKnight no later than Wednesday, March 1st.

QUOTE: The individual quote should represent the senior and be from a “famous person” and not something a friend or family member says. The quote is an assignment in all senior English classes. Students must enter the final draft of the quote with author in Naviance no later than Thursday, December 1st.

CAP & GOWNS, ANNOUNCEMENTS and OTHER SENIOR GOODIES: EMHS contracts with Campus Specialties for the cap & gown and announcements. Seniors received an order form on October 19th. Additional order forms are available in Mrs. Millea’s office. Students are expected to purchase a navy blue cap & gown or borrow one from a friend or family member. Our representative, Phil Ortiz, will return on Monday, October 31st during Lunch in the Community Room to take orders. Full payment is required on 10/31 if the order is under $80. A deposit of at least $80 is required on 10/31 if the order is more than $80. Families may order directly at Campus Specialties if they miss the 10/31 visit. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Each year, students are expected to complete 20 hours of community service, for a total of 80 hours by the end of a student’s senior year. This is a graduation requirement in our charter. Therefore, any student who does not have his/her required community service hours recorded will NOT be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. Please contact Mrs. Podzemny at as soon as possible to check on recorded hours or obtain community service ideas. All community service hours must be entered in the student’s x2VOL account which is accessible through Naviance.

Important Dates

SENIOR EXHIBITION PRESENTATIONS: Senior Exhibition Presentations will be held on Tuesday, April 25th, Wednesday, April 26th and Thursday, April 27th. Seniors will sign up for a presentation day and time through their Senior English class. More information regarding presentation times will be available in the spring from Mrs. Healy and Ms. Kuehne.

SENIOR FINAL EXAMS: Senior Final Exams will be held on Friday, May 5th. This will be the last day of school for seniors! The AP Calculus Exam is on Tuesday, May 9th, so a few seniors will need to return to EMHS to take the AP Exam.

SENIOR FUN WEEK: As a senior tradition, the SPSO sponsors a Senior Fun Week. It will be held the week of May 8th. If any parents or seniors are interested in helping with the fun events, please contact Jennifer Werner at In past years, seniors have gone bowling, to a movie, to an Isotopes game and on a hike. The lock in was held last year at an indoor trampoline park. This year’s lock in is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 11th. Seniors also receive a senior t-shirt at the Graduation Rehearsal. Please be sure you’ve paid your $25 senior fee to SPSO.

SENIOR AWARDS & COLLEGE SIGNING NIGHT: The Senior Awards & College Signing Night will be held on Wednesday, May 10th at 6:30PM in the Fisher & Smith Memorial Gymnasium. Seniors will receive their Dean’s List honors from senior year and departments will award the 2017 Departmental Awards for Outstanding Achievement. Seniors will also announce their post-secondary plans and sign the college posters to be displayed in the Student Guidance Center.

GRADUATION REHEARSAL, BBQ & FUN DAY: Graduation Rehearsal is required for all seniors intending on participating in the ceremony. The rehearsal will be held on Thursday, May 11th at 10AM in the Fisher & Smith Memorial Gymnasium. A senior picture will also be taken by Full Contact Sports Photography. After the Rehearsal, SPSO will sponsor a BBQ and Fun Day for seniors.

CLASS OF 2017 GRADUATION CEREMONY: The EMHS Class of 2017 Graduation Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 14th from 3:00PM – 5:00PM at the Kiva Auditorium in the Albuquerque Convention Center. There is no limit to the number of guests a senior may invite. Parking is available at the Civic Plaza Garage on Marquette & 3rd St. at $6 per vehicle. Entrance to the Convention Center is on 3rd St.
