Inquiry Projects

During the freshman, sophomore and junior years, each student at EMHS undertakes an Inquiry Project, as assignment in which the student decides upon an essential question to research and creates a presentation reflecting his or her new understandings. It is the nature of this question not to present an obvious answer; rather, it requires research on several viewpoints. In the freshman and sophomore years, students must create a presentation that includes the Six Facets of Understanding.

  1. Explain the issue/question.Provide evidence, data and facts.
  2. Interpret the information. Use history, stories, images and personal experience.
  3. Apply the knowledge. Explain how to use the information.
  4. Consider Perspective. How does this look from several points of view?
  5. Demonstrate Empathy. Imagine yourself immersed in the situation.
  6. Gain Self-Knowledge. How to opinions, experiences and beliefs help or hinder understanding?

EMHS believes these are important elements for a presentation because they show an awareness of a topic that is deeper than personal interest and connects students to the larger world. The following is a list of past projects:

  • Do Americans value their liberty?
  • Is technology improving the quality of human life?
  • Should gay marriage rights be allowed?
  • Is euthanasia ethical?
  • Should the US adopt universal healthcare?
  • Is war a necessity?
  • What makes a true friend?
  • Is marriage outdated?
