Meet the Governing Council

David Walter is the Chair of the Governing Council and has served on the Council since 2003. He is retired from a career in education in Illinois, including serving as the Choral Director at Glenbrook North High School, a Teaching Evaluator at Northbrook Elementary School and as an Instructional Supervisor and School Restructuring District Program Manager at Glenbrook High Schools. He was also a Professional Member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Apprentice Conductor of the Symphony Choir. David graduated with a Master of Science in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University and earned his administrative credentials at Northwestern University. David was Chair of the East Mountain High School Founding Committee. He and his wife, Jean, live in the Paa-ko Communities.

Elveta Bishop is the most recent member to join the East Mountain High School Governing Council. She is the owner of Bishop Management Associates and consults with Informed Medical Communications and Sandia National Laboratories. Elveta is retired from a thirty-year career, much of it with Sandia National Laboratories. Elveta brings significant experience with strategic development, project management, technical writing, and effectiveness coaching to the Governing Council. She is a graduate of Fort Lewis College and received her M.B.A from the University of New Mexico. Elveta and her husband, Luke, have two children. Her son Mackenzie was a member of East Mountain High School’s first graduating class in 2004.

Dennis Hodges has served on the East Mountain High School Governing Council since January 2004. He received a BA and MA from Humboldt State University in California and served as the Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of New Mexico and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, between 1970 and 1980. He retired from the State Farm Insurance Company after twenty-eight years as an Agency Field Executive, recruiting and training new agents and managing the Bernalillo County marketplace for positive growth and profit.

Lieutenant General Bradley C. Hosmer chairs the Board of Directors of the Armed Forces Services Corporation. He is also a Regent of the University of New Mexico and a Director on the Board of the New Mexico Health Sciences Center. He has been a private consultant to the Department of Defense and industry since his retirement from the Air Force in June 1994. His work with the Air Force since 1994 includes advising the Air Force Long Range Planning staff of 1995, which led to institutional change in the Air Force; and chairing the Air Force Commission on Organizational Evaluation and Awards – which led to the Air Force Strategic Plan and substantial change in the evaluation of operational effectiveness.   Since retirement from the Air Force he has also chaired or manned public and private special advisory councils, including the Governing Council of East Mountain High School. 

Sylvia Kelly currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, an 87 bed acute medical rehabilitation hospital with gross revenues of $35 million and over 250 employees. She is also the 2011 – 2012 chair of the New Mexico Hospital Association. Before moving to New Mexico, Sylvia served as the Chief Operating Officers of the Children’s Hospital of Orange County and the Centinela Hospital Medical Center. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Case-Western Reserve University and a Masters of Public Administration from California State University. Sylvia is married to Michael Kelly, who is a retired hospital CEO and an Emeritus Member of the East Mountain High School Foundation. Their son, Jake, is an EMHS student. They also have a son in Boise, Idaho and a daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren living in Los Angeles.

Mark Robbins joined the EMHS Governing Council July 2010. Mark has worked for Hewlett Packard as a sales executive since 1998, covering State and Local Governments and Education markets within New Mexico. Mark graduated the College of Santa Fe with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from UNM. Mark and his family have lived in the East Mountain area since 1993. His wife, Jeanne, is a school teacher at Edgewood Middle School. Their sons Aron and Eric both attend EMHS and play on the soccer team.

Karen Thompson is the Director of Hospice and Hospital at Home for Presbyterian Healthcare Services. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia with a B.S. in Occupational Therapy and is currently working on a Masters in Business Administration. Karen and her husband Tom have a daughter living in Des Moines and a son who is a graduate of East Mountain High School. He graduated from New Mexico State University and will be attending law school in the fall of 2012. Karen serves on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross New Mexico.

Floyd Wilson is an attorney with the Albuquerque law firm of Myers, Oliver & Price, and has practiced law in New Mexico for 38 years. He has an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of New Mexico, and a law degree from Harvard Law School. Floyd has served on the East Mountain High School Governing Council since 2010, and has also served on the Board of Directors of other area non-profits, including First Choice Community Healthcare, ARCA and The Samaritan Counseling Center. Floyd and his wife, Peggy, have lived in the East Mountains since 2008.
