A Sad Loss for the EMHS Community

September 23, 2020

Dear EMHS Community:
It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community.

On September 23, 2020, an important member of our faculty, Crystal Wood, became ill with a pre-existing health condition (non-COVID related) and died. Crystal Wood was an incredible English and Drama teacher and coach of our golf team. Her impact on the thousands of students she taught for so many years will be felt for a lifetime.

This loss will raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students.

For today, Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24 our school will have two Student-Teacher Engagement days where there will be no new assignments, quizzes, or Zoom meetings. Our priority is the mental health and well-being of our students and our staff at this time. Students and teachers in all classes will check in with each other as needed.
Additionally, the athletic meeting scheduled for Thursday evening will be re-scheduled to a date next week.

We have counselors available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss. We encourage our parents to also feel free to use those resources. Brandy Wood is available at bwood@eastmountainhigh.net or 505-281-7400 x.194 and Bird Podzemny is available at bpodzemny@eastmountainhigh.net or 505-281-7400 x.409.

We also encourage students to reach out to the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line anytime at 1-855-662-7474. This is also the number to use for any after-hours calls.

We are devestated by this loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your student as you need. We will release additional information as we have it.

Please take care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

Trey Smith
EMHS Principal
